Does Render Need Ongoing Maintenance?

What upkeep different render types actually need over time, and the warning signs that suggest a rendered wall is starting to fail.

Render is often chosen precisely because it protects a wall and gives a property a smart, finished exterior. But different render systems age differently, and “low maintenance” doesn’t mean “no maintenance” for any of them. Knowing what to look out for helps catch problems while they’re still a straightforward repair rather than a full re-render.

Traditional sand and cement render

Traditional render, mixed on site and usually painted, is the system that needs the most regular attention. The paint finish weathers over time and typically needs repainting on a cycle to keep the render protected and looking fresh.
