How silicone render systems work

The system is built in layers: a base coat, usually reinforced with a fibreglass mesh for strength and crack resistance, followed by the silicone top coat in the chosen colour and texture. Preparation is much the same as any render job: the wall needs to be sound, clean and free of anything that could stop the base coat bonding properly. Mesh is fixed into the base coat at corners and around openings to control cracking, and beading is set at edges to keep lines straight. The silicone top coat then goes on in a single, carefully controlled pass, since patching or overlapping this type of finish later can sometimes show as a slight difference in texture or sheen if it isn’t matched carefully.

What to expect

Because it’s a factory-produced system rather than a site mix, silicone render relies on following the manufacturer’s application conditions. The wrong weather on the day, particularly rain or strong sun drying the coat too fast, can affect the finish. Scaffolding or access equipment will be in place for the duration, and the property’s colour and texture are agreed before work starts, since silicone render isn’t typically overpainted once applied.
