Plastering and Skimming

Most jobs start the same way: a wall or ceiling that’s cracked, bowed, damp-stained, or just tired of being patched over and over. Plastering is the trade that gets a surface back to flat, sound and ready to paint, whether that’s one room after a leak or an entire house being renovated from the studwork out.

What plastering actually involves

On a stripped-back wall, the job usually runs in two stages: a base coat to build up an even surface, followed by the finish coat, or skim, which is trowelled smooth. On plasterboard, sometimes only the skim coat is needed, since the board itself provides the flat base. Older stone and solid-wall properties around Bradford often need more preparation than a modern cavity-wall house, because the substrate underneath isn’t as consistent. Corners, window reveals and the joins between wall and ceiling all take extra care, since a rushed edge is usually the first thing that shows once the room is lit and decorated.

Patch repairs are a different job again. Cracks around doorways, a section of ceiling that’s come away, or a wall damaged during other building work can often be repaired without redoing the whole surface, as long as the surrounding plaster is sound enough to key into.

How a typical job runs

A plasterer will usually look at the room first to work out what’s underneath the existing finish and whether it needs stripping back or can be worked over. Furniture and flooring get covered, and depending on the scope, either the whole surface comes off down to brick, block, stone or board, or only the damaged sections are cut out. The base coat goes on first where needed, then the finish coat once that’s firm enough to take it. A skilled finish looks deceptively simple, but getting a wall dead flat with no trowel marks, hollows or high spots takes a steady hand and the right timing between coats.

What to expect during the work

Plastering is a wet trade, so there’s dust from any preparation and a drying period afterwards before the room is back to normal. Rooms are usually out of use while the plaster cures. How long that takes depends on the size of the job, ventilation, and the time of year, since damp winter air slows drying more than a warm, well-aired summer. It’s worth planning decorating around that rather than trying to paint too soon, since paint applied over plaster that hasn’t dried through can trap moisture and cause problems later.

Good preparation beforehand, such as moving furniture, protecting floors, and flagging anything unusual like old wiring or damp patches, makes the job run more smoothly and reduces the chance of surprises once work starts.
