Coving and Cornice

Coving and cornice do a job that’s easy to overlook until it’s missing: they finish the line where wall meets ceiling, hiding the join and giving a room a bit more character than a plain right angle ever does. This covers everything from a simple standard coving profile in a modern extension through to matching or restoring elaborate period cornice in an older property.

Standard coving versus period cornice work

Most new coving fitted today is a standard, off-the-shelf profile in plaster or a lightweight modern alternative, chosen to suit the room and its proportions. Bigger rooms with higher ceilings often take a deeper, more substantial profile, while smaller rooms usually look better with something simpler. Older properties, particularly the pre-1919 stock common across parts of Bradford and its surrounding towns, sometimes have original decorative cornice that’s far more elaborate than anything sold as standard coving. Where that’s damaged, cracked, or partly missing, matching or casting a repair section to the original profile is a different, more specialist job than fitting a plain run in a new-build room.

How coving is fitted

The ceiling and wall junction is checked first, since coving follows the existing line rather than correcting it. Badly out-of-true walls or ceilings sometimes need addressing before coving goes in, or the coving will visibly wander. Lengths are cut to fit the run, with corners mitred so they meet cleanly, and the coving is bonded in place with an adhesive compound suited to the material. Once fixed, joints between lengths and at corners are filled and smoothed so the whole run reads as continuous rather than as separate sections stuck together.

Ceiling roses and other decorative work

Coving is often installed alongside a ceiling rose as a centrepiece, particularly in period-style rooms or where a pendant light fitting needs a finishing detail around it. These can be standard profiles or matched to existing period details where a room’s original rose has been lost or damaged over the years.

What to expect

Coving installation is generally a tidier, quicker job than a full re-plaster, though period cornice matching or restoration can take considerably longer depending on how much detail needs recreating. Expect some dust from cutting and fitting, and a short period for adhesive and filler to set before the room is ready to paint.
