Stud Wall Installation

Splitting a room in two, closing off a landing, or framing up a new wall in a loft conversion or extension all come down to the same basic job: building a stud partition. It’s the internal wall’s skeleton, timber or metal studs set out and fixed between floor and ceiling, before plasterboard and a skim finish turn it into a proper wall.

Timber versus metal stud

Timber studwork remains a common choice for domestic partitions. It’s straightforward to work with, easy to fix boards, sockets and shelving brackets into, and well understood by most trades that follow on afterwards. Metal stud systems, built from C-shaped steel track and studs, are lighter, won’t warp or shrink the way timber can, and are often specified where a very straight, true wall is needed or where the wall needs to meet a particular fire or acoustic rating. Which one makes sense depends on the job, the span, and what the wall needs to do beyond simply dividing a space.

What goes into building a stud wall

The job starts with marking out the wall’s position and checking it against the existing floor, ceiling and any structural elements nearby. A head track and sole plate are fixed to the ceiling and floor, then vertical studs are set at regular centres between them. Noggins, the horizontal blocking pieces between studs, get added at key heights to support fixings for things like shelving, radiators or a TV bracket, which is why it pays to know what’s going on the wall before it’s built rather than trying to retrofit strong points later. Any electrical cabling, insulation or acoustic material that needs to sit inside the wall goes in before the boards go up.

How the job typically runs

Once the frame is up and checked for level and plumb, plasterboard is fixed to both faces, joints are taped and filled, and the wall is usually then skimmed to a smooth finish ready for decoration. Door openings, if included, are framed with additional studs and a header to carry the load above the opening.

What to expect

Expect some noise and dust while the frame goes up and boards are cut and fixed, followed by the same drying and finishing process as any plastered wall. It’s worth deciding early on where sockets, switches, radiators and shelving will go, since running services and building in support for fixings is far simpler before the wall is closed up.
